Success runs in the 80 to 95% range.  Fall also opens up Montana's Grouse season which most hunters have great success.  In the plains area  the Sharp-tailed Grouse, Hungarian Partridge and Sage Hens have been reported in very high numbers.  Pheasant numbers in Montana are higher than they have been in the past 3 years.  To add to all this the waterfowl population seems to have exploded this year.  It seams as though there are Geese every where, and most of the pot holes are holding Ducks.  As usual the 1st 2 weeks of waterfowl season is the best time to hunt Montana, until the Northern flights from Canada arrive, which usually starts around the 1st of November through Dec., depending on how cold Canada gets.  Montana Experience outfitters offers water fowl and upland game bird hunts in the Fort Peck area each Fall.   In Western Montana Blue Grouse, Spruce Grouse and Ruffed Grouse seem to be in good numbers.  Blues and Spruces are generally found at the mountain tops out on the finger ridges.  The Ruffed Grouse is found in the creek bottoms and the very thick cover areas, also along logging roads morning and evening.  All these birds make good table fare.  In future news letters we will now be including a new game recipe each time.  Montana is one of the few states which offers some unusual opportunities for the Tundra Swan and the Sand Hill Crane, which is some times called "ribeye in the sky".  Both these birds are extremely good eating.

Big game season is just around the corner.  Once again most of the wild life seems to be in plentiful numbers.  While chasing Elk around with a bow we saw good amounts of big bucks.  Antelope and Mule Deer.  I expect this season Montana Experience Outfitters will have 98% success rate with Deer and Antelope.  North East Montana, where we operate our outfitting business, there is a certain type of soil called Bentinite.  It retains moisture extremely well.  Most of Montana was in a drought this summer except for Eastern Montana where the soil held moisture to produce high protein grass.  Which, produces good horn growth.  The Elk population in Montana this year is exploding.  Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks have asked outfitters for their suggestions in regards as to what to do with the increasingly large numbers of Elk.  My thoughts were to open up the general season for either sexed elk for the 1st couple of weeks.  This would allow those that are only able to get out 1 or 2 weekends to hunt each season an easier opportunity to harvest an Elk.

Spring Time In The Rockies

This is one of the most beautiful times of the year here in Montana to fish!  April is one of the 1st truly good fly fishing months after a long cold winter with an abundance of squallas hatching on both the Bitterroot and the Clark Fork.  The rivers are alive again for the new season.  Most Rainbow, Browns and Cutthroats feed very heavily as the waters warm up.  God has provided us with large bugs to feed them.  Not only do the squallas come off, but large size 10 green and gray Drakes come off at this time, and large quantities of Golden Stone Flies.  This is a great time for dry fly fishermen to experience explosive top water takes usually resulting in Trout ranging from 14 to 22 inches, and bigger sometimes.
