Fall 2007 Newsletter

Montana has as much to offer in the Fall as any other state that I can think of.  Lets start with Fly Fishing Montana's Blue Ribbon Rivers.  Each morning from September till the snow fly's we start our day with a Trico hatch, which usually hits the water by 10:30 or 11:00.  This generally brings up the Trout for the 1st meal of the day.  This hatch is followed by a large hatch of Blue Winged Olives that blanket the surface, especially on a cloudy or rainy day.  By mid afternoon Pmds and Mahogany Dons finish the day off.  Most of the fish in the Missoula area have grown 3 to 5 inches during the past Summer, which equates to alot of large fish in the Fall.  The cold nights cool down our rivers which tells the fish to start putting on their winter feed bag.  Most of the Fall fishing we find the fish very eager to take a fly.  Fall is also the start of Montana's hunting season.  We started off September 1st with a very successful archery Elk hunt.  Most of our hunters went home with mature bulls and those hunters that didn't score all had opportunities to shoot a bull at ranges from 10 to 45 yards. _ _ _ _ happens.  All 5 archery Elk spots are now full for the up coming 2008 season.  We will now be taking reservations for the 2009 archery Elk hunt.  This is a lottery draw for the archery Elk tag.

Success runs in the 80 to 95% range.  Fall also opens up Montana's Grouse season which most hunters have great success.  In the plains area  the Sharp-tailed Grouse, Hungarian Partridge and Sage Hens have been reported in very high numbers.  Pheasant numbers in Montana are higher than they have been in the past 3 years.  To add to all this the waterfowl population seems to have exploded this year.  It seams as though there are Geese every where, and most of the pot holes are holding Ducks.  As usual the 1st 2 weeks of waterfowl season is the best time to hunt Montana, until the Northern flights from Canada arrive, which usually starts around the 1st of November through Dec., depending on how cold Canada gets.  Montana Experience outfitters offers water fowl and upland game bird hunts in the Fort Peck area each Fall.   In Western Montana Blue Grouse, Spruce Grouse and Ruffed Grouse seem to be in good numbers.  Blues and Spruces are generally found at the mountain tops out on the finger ridges.  The Ruffed Grouse is found in the creek bottoms and the very thick cover areas, also along logging roads morning and evening.  All these birds make good table fare.  In future news letters we will now be including a new game recipe each time.  Montana is one of the few states which offers some unusual opportunities for the Tundra Swan and the Sand Hill Crane, which is some times called "ribeye in the sky".  Both these birds are extremely good eating.

Big game season is just around the corner.  Once again most of the wild life seems to be in plentiful numbers.  While chasing Elk around with a bow we saw good amounts of big bucks.  Antelope and Mule Deer.  I expect this season Montana Experience Outfitters will have 98% success rate with Deer and Antelope.  North East Montana, where we operate our outfitting business, there is a certain type of soil called Bentinite.  It retains moisture extremely well.  Most of Montana was in a drought this summer except for Eastern Montana where the soil held moisture to produce high protein grass.  Which, produces good horn growth.  The Elk population in Montana this year is exploding.  Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks have asked outfitters for their suggestions in regards as to what to do with the increasingly large numbers of Elk.  My thoughts were to open up the general season for either sexed elk for the 1st couple of weeks.  This would allow those that are only able to get out 1 or 2 weekends to hunt each season an easier opportunity to harvest an Elk.

Spring Time In The Rockies

This is one of the most beautiful times of the year here in Montana to fish!  April is one of the 1st truly good fly fishing months after a long cold winter with an abundance of squallas hatching on both the Bitterroot and the Clark Fork.  The rivers are alive again for the new season.  Most Rainbow, Browns and Cutthroats feed very heavily as the waters warm up.  God has provided us with large bugs to feed them.  Not only do the squallas come off, but large size 10 green and gray Drakes come off at this time, and large quantities of Golden Stone Flies.  This is a great time for dry fly fishermen to experience explosive top water takes usually resulting in Trout ranging from 14 to 22 inches, and bigger sometimes.

Fishing the Rockies in the Springtime is always subject to the Spring run off.  Sometimes the river can fish extremely well for a few days, than it warms up and the river blows out over night.  What I mean by that is high muddy water and floating debris.  Basically very tough fishing.  So, I strongly suggest whatever outfitter you use in the Spring time try and stay in contact with him so he can give you current up dates on river situations and opportunities.  The river changes a lot in the Spring and very quickly. Contact your outfitter to obtain the best dates that work for you

This seasons Steelhead fishing over in Idaho was very productive for most.  Most anglers found themselves landing Steelhead on a regular basis.  We anxiously await every Spring to see if there will be a Chinook run large enough to open a season for.  That's a long way for a Salmon to come, but these fish are strong, fairly bright, and just a fun fish to fish for in high mountain river settings.

If you are a Bass and Pike fishermen  Springtime is your prime time.  When Montana warms up 65 to 75 for about 10 days the rivers start to rise.  The back waters fill up with warm water and large aggressive fish.  Many times in the Spring you can take 4 to 9 pound pike and 1 to 4 pound large mouth bass on streamer patterns.  The flathead River is a large river which gives plenty of room for fishermen and lots of opportunities for big fish.

The month of June usually is Montana's major run off period of time.  There are options around the state such as spring creeks, tail water fisheries, lakes and ponds that still provide good fishing while the majority of the rivers are high and muddy.  This generally lasts till about the 3rd week up June than the rivers begin to clear up and drop.  This can be one of my favorite times because I find a lot of big Trout still holding in the back channels and back water eddies.  They become easy targets at this time.  When planning your fishing vacation to Montana take in to consideration all the different options I have mentioned above and plan your trip so you can maximize your fishing experience in Montana.  Remember fishing styles in Montana change on a weekly basis.  Check with your outfitter to see if they offer the type of fishing you enjoy the most.  There are many good outfitters in the State of Montana.  Find the one that works for you the best.  We hope you choose Carl Mann's Montana Experience Outfitters."  If we can't help you we will be glad to refer other outfitters that may better suit your needs.  Tight Lines and have a great Spring!!!!
